3 Tips to Prevent Spring Sports Injuries at School

School sports can be a lot of fun and can provide vital physical activity, but it’s important that kids know how to stay safe while they play. After all, approximately 6.8 million bones are broken each year in the U.S., and your kid won’t want to be sidelined with an injury for the season! If your child sustains an injury playing their favorite sport this year, urgent care centers can provide fast, high-quality treatment on a more convenient schedule. But to prevent these injuries before they happen, be sure your child follow these three important tips.

  1. Drink plenty of water
    Your kid may love those sports drinks, but nothing is better than plain old H20. While playing sports — especially in the hot sun — they should be sure to take a water break every 20 minutes or so. They should also hydrate both before and after doing any kind of physical activity. Cold water can help keep their body at an optimal temperature. You can do your part by teaching them the signs of dehydration, like dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and lethargy, as this condition can be extremely dangerous.
  2. Block out the sun
    Many of us love to spend time in the sun, but too much of it can definitely be a bad thing. Taking a brief rest in the shade can help prevent heat stroke, and sunscreen is a must. Look for broad spectrum sunblocks that have an SPF of 30 or higher, as this should be enough to prevent sun damage. Apply it at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors and make sure they reapply frequently! If they’re sweating a lot, every 30 minutes should suffice.
  3. Get gear that fits
    If your child isn’t wearing sports gear (or is wearing gear that doesn’t fit properly), this can lead to serious injury. If you want to avoid visiting walk in clinics for emergency sprains or breaks, they’ll need the right protection. Helmets, mouth guards, eyewear, and pads should be worn at all times during practices and games, and both coaches and parents need to ensure they fit properly. However, it’s important to note that even when they’re wearing gear that fits, they could still get hurt.
