When it comes to flu season, prevention can be extremely difficult. Sometimes it seems like no matter what you do, you’ll get the flu anyway. In fact, on average, between 5% and 20% of Americans come down with the flu each year. However, there are many small steps you can take to protect yourself against illness. Here are some simple ways to prevent the flu.

  1. Wash your hands frequently:
If the only time you wash your hands is after you use the bathroom, you’re not washing them nearly enough. You should be consistently washing your hands anytime you come home from a public place, like a grocery store, or especially a hospital or medical care center. Make sure to use soap and warm water, or, if they aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Keeping your hands clean is one of the best ways to prevent any airborne illness — not just the flu.
  2. Stay healthy:
The real key to preventing the flu is to keep your immune system healthy. You should always aim to get eight hours of sleep every night. Additionally, you should be getting healthy amounts of key vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C. In addition to eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, it’s important to take vitamin supplements as well. Talk to your doctor for more information about which supplements are right for you.
  3. Keep your home clean:
If you have a lot of people living in your home, it’s important to keep surfaces like tables and countertops clean. Germs can easily linger and even thrive on these surfaces, so you should be disinfecting them fairly frequently. If someone in your home gets sick, take extra measures to keep surfaces clean.
  4. Avoid touching your face:
Once germs are on your hands, they can easily be transmitted into your body if you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Try to avoid touching your face if your hands aren’t clean, or if you’re in a public place. On the same level, it’s critical to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing to prevent passing the flu on to someone else.

Ultimately, these are just a few simple steps you can take to prevent the flu. If you feel any flu-like symptoms coming on, it’s important to visit an urgent walk in clinic to receive the appropriate medical tests. For more information about urgent walk in clinics, contact AFC/Doctors Express.
